Corn hole Bags and Extras Prove Popularity
|
You might associate the Corn hole Game(also known as cornhole) with the patrons of bars who like to play the bean bag game while enjoying a frosty brew. Corn hole game, however, is growing well beyond that and is becoming a popular past time from coast to coast in a variety of settings. NFL quarterback Carson Palmer’s experience with the corn hole game is a perfect illustration of just how far the game has come.
Palmer and his wife, Shae, learned about corn hole shortly after moving to Cincinnati. The Ohio city is the “home of corn hole” and corn hole game tournaments are a regular part of the community’s entertainment scene, so it wasn’t surprising that Palmer would learn about the game. Palmer might not find tossing bags of feed corn into a hole in a piece of plywood quite as challenging as hitting a wide receiver on a crossing pattern with a football while being chased by a linebacker, but he “got hooked on playing corn hole” and decided to parlay that love of the game with a great charitable cause.
Palmer recruited a collection of other professional football players and invited them to participate in a charitable corn hole game tournament to raise funds for Lighthouse Youth Services, a child-oriented charity in the Cincinnati area. The first of hopefully many “Carson Palmer Corn Hole Classics” took place in June of 2006 and the results were amazing. Community turnout was high as guests enjoyed food, drink, and the chance to play some corn hole against other aficionados and NFL stars.
The tournament raised thousands for Lighthouse. Participants made donations and sponsor companies paid thousands of dollars in exchange for exposure at the event. Carson Palmer demonstrated that the community’s love of football, baggo and helping the less fortunate could be merged into a truly unforgettable event. The corn hole game seems to have escaped its humble roots and a bar game and has hit the mainstream. Having an NFL quarterback leveraging the power of corn hole to help a city demonstrates just how popular the game has become. What was once a relatively unknown activity is now a great fundraising opportunity and it appears as if the game now has at least one high-profile spokesperson on its side.
