Cornhole foursome becomes a wedding party years later

Growing up first in the deep south and then in the rural, ranching and mining Southwest, I'd never seen or heard of Cornhole.

("Cornhole?" I was thinking. Isn't that something Beavis and Butthead used to say that my parents got really ticked over in the 1990s?)

It wasn't until I moved to Chicagoland in the mid-2000s and started dating a local guy that I discovered the game. We were at a backyard barbecue party in the 'burbs, and the Cornhole Boards were set up on the lawn. Only they all called it "Bags" or "Baggo."

I was matched up with this really intimidating, baseball-pitching-star friend of my boyfriend's, and I played horribly! My aim was waaay off. Embarrassingly so. But it was still fun. And over the years, I played many more times at similar get-togethers.

Our friends, I learned, make some really creative boards, building cup holders into the backside or decorating them with elaborate Bears, Sox or Cubs logos and colors.

Now we're back in the Southwest, and we've brought the game with us. All our neighbors look forward to when we pull out the game ... which, I hate to admit, we currently borrow from a co-worker for a couple weeks at a time. We are so overdue on building or buying our ownCornhole Set!

Oh, and the boyfriend and I got married, and my scary inaugural Cornhole partner turned out to be a really nice guy and the Best Man in our wedding -- something I couldn't even imagine the night he was nailing every throw and my bags were ending up in trees and over fences.
